I love heartfelt movies, but watching this one, I for the first time recalled the Smug Alert episode of South Park. Not sure what made it too much. The artsy black-and-white with an uncommon aspect ratio could not have been it by themselves. I guess the meta-awareness has somehow seeped up. “Not only we’re making a plotless feel-good movie about very kind people, we’re also pretty smug about it.”
